Members of the Penang Bar Committee for 2006/2007 will be paying courtesy calls on the High Court Judges as well as the Sessions Court Judges and Magistrates soon.
Therefore members are kindly requested to inform the Committee if they would like us to raise any particular issues or matters of concern with the respective Courts.
Members may either send in their complaints, questions and queries via E-mail to secretariat@penangbar.org or using the survey forms which are available at the Bar Room and on the Penang Bar website at www.penangbar.org.

To all Members of the Penang Bar,
Updating of Contact Information
Since late 2004, in a move to save cost and time as well as being in line with the Bar Council, the Penang Bar has been sending each legal firm one hard copy of every Circular. At the same time, copies of these circulars are also posted on the Penang Bar website and sent via e-mail to lawyers who have provided their addresses to the Secretariat.
The Committee therefore requests for members who have yet to provide their personal e-mail addresses to do so immediately by sending an e-mail titled ‘Updating Contact Info’ to secretariat@penangbar.org. Members are also requested to regularly update the Secretariat if they change e-mail addresses.
Members who cease practice or change firms are requested to comply with the Bar Council’s “Rules On Cessation Of, Or Change In, Practice” dated 1st July 2004. These Rules are available on the Penang Bar website.

RE: COURT BOXES AT THE BUTTERWORTH COURT PREMISES
We wish to inform you that we have put up 25 more Boxes at the Butterworth Court premises to accommodate requests from several firms who do not have a Court Box.
If you wish to obtain a Court Box at the Butterworth Court premises, kindly call at the Penang Bar Secretariat with your cheque for RM120/- made payable to the ‘PENANG BAR COMMITTEE’ being the fee for same.

CONVEYANCING NEWS
The Conveyancing Practice Committee has decided to set up a Sub Committee to specifically look into the issue and scope of “other Security Documents” in the context of the Fourth Schedule of the Solicitors’ Remuneration Order.
It is hoped that the Sub Committee will provide some form of guidelines as to what “Security Documents” are.
This will be helpful in the context of the Bar Council’s continued commitment in the enforcement of “the no discount” rule within the Solicitors Remuneration Order.

NEW SOLICITORS’ REMUNERATION ORDER
The new Solicitors’ Remuneration Order (new SRO) is now pending publication in the Government Gazette.
The revised effective date of the new SRO is tentatively fixed for 1st January 2006.
Members are reminded to check constantly with the Malaysian Bar Website for the new SRO which will be uploaded the moment the new SRO is gazetted.
